BLACKNORTH ACADEMY
C-SUITE AND BOARDROOM PREPAREDNESS
Current Reality
- Black Canadians make up less than 1% of senior executives
- There are less than five Black C-suite executives in Canada’s seven largest energy companies, six largest banks, five largest telecom providers or two largest life insurers
- In the public sector, there is one Black Canadians as federal deputy ministers or federal court judges. Many Black employees in Canada report discrimination when it comes to promotions

BlackNorth Academy is a one-year online bespoke program, led by two Rotman School of Management professors at the University of Toronto, David R. Beatty, and Professor Kelly Murumets
The program is designed to provide professionals, across various industries and from diverse educational backgrounds, with valuable skills that enhance their business judgment, career prospects and prepare them to break the glass ceiling to C-suite offices and the boardrooms of Canadian businesses

- Cultural modalities, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: role of representation and team diversity as a strength
- Effective presentations
- Radical candour: practices to get, give, encourage guidance and feedback at work. Strategies for building a cohesive team
- Negotiation, leadership, and situational management
- Building your brand
- Digital tsunami: how it affects and challenges old business models
- Macro-economics and public policy
- Governance strategies for public and
not-for-profit boards
Delivery
- Nearly 20 guest speakers, lecturers, directors, and current and former CEOs have been invited over the year to share their experiences and lessons learned with students
- Classes are a combination of lectures, student input and engagement, student experiential exercises, and fireside chats with executives from Canadian businesses
- Class assignments are individual-based and team-based
- Students share their top three insights, their impact and learned experiences during the final session. Upon completion of the program, they commit to planned actions and undertakings.
